Ashley House Transition Home For Female Veterans

On Saturday, January 15, a groundbreaking ceremony took place for “Ashley’s House” in Eustis, Florida. The event was attended by members and leaders of various veterans' organizations, Board members of the U.S. Army Women’s Foundation, the President and Central Florida Ambassador to the Women’s Memorial, local and state officials, and the family of 1LT Ashley White-Stumpf.

“Ashley’s House” will be a 4,000-square-foot transitional group home, located on Grove Street in Eustis, Florida, and is dedicated to the memory of First Lieutenant Ashley White-Stumpf, who was just 24 years old when she gave her life in service. 1LT White was among the first members of the Cultural Support Team selected and deployed by U.S. Special Operations Command. She was tragically killed by an improvised explosive device during combat operations in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, on October 22, 2011.

According to Marie Bogdonoff, founder and CEO of Villagers for Veterans, “The house will be an all-female veteran transition home, offering women veterans a temporary safe haven, while also providing job training, counseling, and much-needed female camaraderie as they work towards self-sufficiency in a secure and supportive environment."

About Marie

After retiring to The Villages, Florida, Marie Bogdonoff knew volunteerism would be an important part of her life. After extensive research, the New York transplant decided to focus on veterans. That in turn, led to hosting several fundraising events.

Her heart-felt efforts led to an invitation to Walter Reed Medical Center's Christmas Party – a party held for veterans recuperating from their injuries. At that party Marie met 15 injured warriors whose lives would never be the same. The date was December 7, 2014.

“What an awakening!” Marie said. “I never realized how many warriors were still recovering from such devastating injuries.”

That trip changed Marie. She found a new mission in life. The retiree started a non-profit (Villagers for Veterans) to help severely injured vets regain their independence. The non-profit would work with all veterans and be 100% volunteer.

“The Villages was the perfect place to launch this non-profit,” Marie said. “We have endless talent and a generous community with great love and support for its veterans.”
